American Islamic Congress Hosts Former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid

WahidWashington – The American Islamic Congress has announced it is hosting a special May 9 address by former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid at George Washington University.

The event, organized by the GWU chapter of AIC's campus initiative Project Nur, is presented in conjunction with LibForAll Foundation, which spotlights liberal Indonesian Muslim advocates.

The public is invited to join AIC members for this presentation by President Wahid, a noted international statesman who has lived and studied throughout the Muslim world, titled: "The Last King of Java: Reflections on the Need for Moderate Islam."

Wahid served as the first democratically elected president of Indonesia, and as the  president of Nahdlatul Ulama, one of the world's largest Muslim organizations. He is a long-time advocate against Islamist extremism and a tireless promoter of interfaith relations.

What: A speech given by former Indonesian president H.E. Kyai Abdurrahman Wahid with an introduction by the President of George Washington University Steven Knapp and speeches by the Executive Director of American Islamic Congress Zainab Al-Suwaij.

When: Friday May 9, 2008 at 12:30 pm, followed by a lunch reception at 1:30. The event is free and open to the public.
