Zainab Al-Suwaij provided sensitivity training to soldiers deploying to Middle East
“We support troops trying to stop terror abroad, only to find terror within our borders.”
WASHINGTON, DC (November 6, 2009) – In the aftermath of the tragedy at Fort Hood yesterday afternoon, the American Islamic Congress released the following statement by its executive director, Zainab Al-Suwaij:
“Two years ago, I was asked by the US military to provide sensitivity training to soldiers at Fort Hood about to deploy to the Middle East. I was warmly welcomed to the base, and met with hundreds of soldiers who were respectful, polite, and eager to learn from a Muslim woman. My heart breaks at the thought that some of these young men and women may have been killed or wounded in yesterday’s attack.
“The American Islamic Congress condemns the shameful act of the killer. There is no possible justification for his actions. We also extend condolences to the families of those killed and wounded.
“We Americans support our troops as they risk their lives to try to stop terror abroad. But yesterday’s attack is a reminder that terror can occur inside our own country. Radical ideologies are spreading in the US. We need to take stock of this reality and deal with it as responsible leaders.”
