CapitolThe Impact of Pan-Arab Media: Greater Insight or Greater Incitement?

Thursday February 26th, 2009
B-340 Rayburn building, Capitol Hill

12pm

Pan-Arab media outlets have radically altered the public flow of information across the heart of the Muslim world. TV, newspapers, radio, and the Internet are powerful tools shaping social norms and propagating ideas that reflect cultural values. Yet many Western analysts are raising concerns about the values promoted by regional media, with some accusing stations like Al Jazeera of promoting violence, hate speech, and a Muslim Brotherhood agenda. Our panelists will discuss the growing impact of pan-Arab media, including whether it is opening minds or hardening hearts.

Featuring:
Mohammed El Menshawi, Editor in Chief, Taqrir Washington, World Security Institute

Salameh Nematt, Former Washington Bureau Chief, Al Hayat newspaper

Moderated by:
Zainab Al Suwaij, Executive Director, American Islamic Congress
